Graduation Procedures

1. Preparing to Graduate

Begin this process at least one full semester before your intended graduation date, or when you reach 92 credit hours. Early planning ensures you have time to address any issues before deadlines arrive.

2. Academic Advising Appointment

  • Schedule a Meeting: Make an appointment with your OILS undergraduate advisor. This can be done via email or LoboAchieve/Student HUB

  • Bring Your Transcript: Bring an unofficial transcript (from LoboWeb or Degree Audit) to your meeting.

  • Graduation Check: Your advisor will review your completed and in-progress coursework, and then:

    • Fill out a Program of Studies or Degree Completion Plan.

    • Identify any remaining requirements.

    • Provide an estimated graduation semester (e.g., Spring 2026).

Ask about electives, GPA requirements, and double-check that your General Education and major-specific requirements are all covered.

3. Complete the Remaining Coursework

  • Stay on Track: Complete all required courses with passing grades.

  • Resolve Any “I” Grades: Ensure all “Incomplete” grades are finalized. Any unresolved “I” will block graduation.

  • Fix Non-Reported Grades (NRs): Follow up with instructors for missing grades and confirm updates on LoboWeb.

4. Apply for Graduation

  • At your graduation check your advisor will put you in for graduation.

5. Cap & Gown and Graduation Regalia

  • Bookstore Pickup: Visit the UNM Bookstore (online or in-person) to purchase your cap, gown, tassel, and other regalia.

  • Check Announcements: The Bookstore and the UNM Commencement website will post details on pickup dates and regalia colors specific to your college.

6. Commencement & Convocation

  • UNM Commencement: This is a university-wide ceremony open to all graduates of the University of New Mexico. RSVP required at:  University Commencement :: Graduation Events

  • OILS Convocation: Attend OILS Convocation ceremony. This is where your name is called, and your accomplishments will be recognized.

    • Watch your UNM email for RSVP links and guest ticket info.

7. Receiving Your Diploma

  • Official Degree Posting: Degrees are typically posted 2–4 weeks after grades are finalized.

  • Diploma Mailing: Diplomas are mailed approximately 6–8 weeks after graduation to the address listed in LoboWeb.

    • Check your mailing address in LoboWeb to avoid delays.
